Title

RESOLUTION 25-215, PROPOSED CHARTER AMENDMENT ON THE NOTICE AND CONDUCT OF PUBLIC HEARINGS  (GREAT-10(3))

Description

The Committee is in receipt of Resolution 25-215, entitled “PROPOSING AMENDMENTS TO THE CHARTER OF THE COUNTY OF MAUI (1983), AS AMENDED, RELATED TO THE NOTICE AND CONDUCT OF PUBLIC MEETINGS, PURSUANT TO THE HAWAIʻI SUNSHINE LAW.”  Resolution 25-215’s purpose is to place on the next General Election ballot the question of whether the Revised Charter of the County of Maui (1983), as amended, should be amended effective January 1, 2027, to clarify that Council, board, and commission meetings must be publicly noticed and held in compliance with state law by eliminating the outdated requirement to publish notice in a newspaper of general circulation in the County and replacing the term “public hearing” with “public meeting.”

Status

The Committee may consider whether to recommend passage of Resolution 25-215 on first reading, with or without revisions.  The Committee may also consider the filing of Resolution 25-215 and other related action.
