BILL 112 (2026), ESTABLISHING CHAPTER 8.37, MAUI COUNTY CODE, ON FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY  (DRIP-26)

 

Description

The Committee is in receipt of Bill 112 (2026), entitled “A BILL FOR AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING CHAPTER 8.37, MAUI COUNTY CODE, ON FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY.”  Bill 112’s purpose is to: 

1)                     Require a County law enforcement agency’s facial recognition technology only be used in connection with a documented criminal investigation;

2)                     Limit access to and training on the technology to designated users; and

3)                     Require that a result generated by the technology be treated as an investigative lead rather than as proof of identity.

 

Status

The Committee may consider whether to recommend passage of Bill 112 (2026) on first reading, with or without revisions.  The Committee may also consider the filing of Bill 112 (2026) and other related action.
