PLASTIC DISPOSABLE FOODWARE  (CARE-29)

Description

The Committee is in receipt of the following:

1.                     County Communication 18-430, from Councilmember Elle Cochran, transmitting a proposed bill relating to restricting the use and sale of single-use plastic disposable foodware.

2.                     Correspondence dated June 23, 2021, from the Department of the Corporation Counsel, transmitting a proposed bill entitled “A BILL FOR AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 20.26, MAUI COUNTY CODE, RESTRICTING THE USE AND SALE OF FOAM COOLERS.”  The purposes of the proposed bill are to promote public health, reduce litter, and limit harmful materials from entering the environment by:

1.  Updating the definition of plastic disposable foodware to include foam coolers;

2.  Regulating and limiting foam coolers; and

3.  Encouraging the use of non-polystyrene coolers.

Status

The Committee may discuss matters relating to the current use of foam coolers and impacts the proposed bill may have on Maui County.  The Committee may also hear from the Office of the Mayor and the Department of Environmental Management, and consider whether to recommend passage of the proposed bill on first reading, with or without revisions, the filing of County Communication 18-430, and other related action.
