Title

SUNSCREEN  (CARE-54)

 

Description

The Committee is in receipt of the following:

1.                     County Communication 21-305, from Councilmember Tamara Paltin, transmitting a proposed bill to regulate the sale, use, and distribution of sunscreen containing oxybenzone and octinoxate.

2.                     Correspondence dated October 14, 2021 from the Department of the Corporation Counsel, transmitting a revised proposed bill entitled “A BILL FOR AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING CHAPTER 20.42, MAUI COUNTY CODE, TO PROHIBIT THE SALE, USE, OR DISTRIBUTION OF NON-MINERAL SUNSCREENS.”  The purpose of the revised proposed bill is to prohibit the sale, use, or distribution of non-mineral sunscreens.

 

Status

The Committee may receive remarks from Dr. Craig Downs, Executive Director, Haereticus Environmental Laboratory; and Peter Landon, Natural Area Reserve System Specialist, Department of Land and Natural Resources, State of Hawai‘i.  The Committee may discuss the matter and consider whether to recommend passage of the revised proposed bill on first reading, with or without further revisions.  The Committee may also consider whether to recommend the filing of County Communication 21-305 and other related action.
